Andrew Harrison – 1 Peter 1 – reflections on the teaching here.

Looking at this chapter in the context of rejoicing/being glad that we looked at last week. (see below)

Andrew Harrison – Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him.

v6 – the greatly rejoicing is linked to the leaping that we saw last week.

v7 – the trail is the time in which we are, that our faith must be made pure.

James

1. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

2. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

3. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

4. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

It’s hard to achieve v2, we need to deem it joyous.

Back in 1 Peter, the context of v6 starts in v3.

We are born again, through resurrection.

What are we born into? 4. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Lev 20

1 Peter 1

13. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14. As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

15. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

16. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

There are two types of fashioning. Not according to the former lusts, but as obedient children.

Lev 20

v2 the man who gives his seed to Molech should be put to death.

If men continue to do it, the holy place is defiled.

The example in Lev 20 are examples of the lusts that are being put aside in 1 Peter 1.

7. Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.

“Hallow ourselves” it is reflexive. Then it says “and you WILL be holy”

v8 – Keeping in yourselves (in our hearts and minds) then when the situation arises we will think to do them.

8. And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the LORD which sanctify you. “Yahweh our hallower” It is in Christ we can become holy, but we need to understand that it is God that makes us holy.

Later in the chapter,

Graphic language, but this is describing our natural state.

22. Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out.

23. And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.

24. But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.

25. Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.

26. And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.

You will DO my commandments, otherwise the earth will vomit you.

Very powerful language where Yahweh has put this separation between the C of I, that the people are HIS. He causes this separation. He then requires this holiness from him, who will share his holiness, he makes them to be holy.

Going back to 1 Peter 1

v 10 is talking about the scriptures…

10. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

11. Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

In this context of the people of old enquiring and searching, that we must…. v 13

13. Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14. As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

15. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

16. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

v16 – the scripture is the THING that we can search and look for this separation that God has put in place. This is how we can hallow ourselves, but the operation of the word on us.

James 1

2. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

3. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

4. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

There is an element of patience that is required, but once it has completed it’s work, there is a state where it is perfect, entire and doesn’t want anything.

Heb 12

1. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

11. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised there by.

12. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

13. And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

14. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Acts 7 faith of Abraham in the inheritance that he was promised

3. And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

4. Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

5. And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: ye the promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

Mark mentioned that the word has to act on us, here, it’s is God’s word that Abraham acted on. He didn’t have a child as it says here.

Gal 3

16. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

17. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

18. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Link with James and the joy.

Col 3

23. And what soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

24. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

If we serve Christ, we will receive the reward of inheritance!

Heb 11

8. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

13. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

1 Peter 1

3. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

5. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

7. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

8. Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
